VIDEO-Introducing TMFproject’s OPERATION: GET EXCITED

I’ve lived abroad. I’ve written eBooks. I’ve learned other languages. I’ve gotten pick-pocketed more times than I’ve gone skiing (true story). I’ve been a nomad. And I’ve fallen deeply love with the lifestyle design approach to life.

And as much as I promote that lifestyle with every last drop of my being, here’s the truth: Even if that type of lifestyle is your end goal, you might not be at that point just yet.

So here’s the deal.

Living an excitement-filled, passionate lifestyle doesn’t always have to mean running off to Cuba, adorned in a Zorro mask and armed with nothing more than a leap of faith, in search of exotic cigars and cheap rum. (Although, if there’s a Zorro mask involved, I would definitely give it some thought.)

Maybe you’re not ready for that yet.

Maybe that’s not even your goal.

Maybe you think Cuba is stupid.

It doesn’t matter.

Whoever you are, wherever you are, whatever stage of life your currently at & whatever side of the potato-potatoe camp you belong to…you have a choice. You have a choice as to whether you want to live your life according to how other people tell you to live it, and you have a choice as to whether you want to live your life according to how you want to live it. It’s as simple as that.

Personally, I pick the latter.

Allow me to introduce The Middle Finger Project’s OPERATION: GET EXCITED.

OPERATION: GET EXCITED is my attempt at helping you to get inspired to see that there are things you can do right here, right now to add excitement to your life. It’s something I’d like to call Small-Scale Lifestyle Design. Large-scale lifestyle design is essentially all about increasing the quality of your life, so whatever helps you to attain that goal is okay in my book. Whatever it is that gets you excited, is exactly what you NEED TO DO. Today. No more oh-sorry-I’m-washing-my-hair-today excuses. Trust me, you’ll be happy you left it dirty.

To summarize, I’ll be posting videos that will capture me trying out a new unconventional hobby or activity…hopefully without doing too much bodily harm. The idea is not to advocate one particular activity over another; it’s simply just to help you get motivated to break the routine and go try something new that you’ve been wanting to try; it’s not as intimidating as you might think. Go ahead, go do something fun!

Alas, I present you with video numero uno – it’s a bit experiential, but I think you’ll get a kick out of it. Especially because you get to see me get a little nervous on camera…which is admittedly entertaining.

As always, I’ll leave you with this: To hell with the shoulds; life is short…do what you want!

  • I'm late to the punch, you wrote this post more than a month ago! I'm a new friend though so I have some catching up to do. Let me just say I love Project Get Excited! It's something about the Zeitgeist?Get Excited shares an sisterhood of sorts with The Bluegrass Romance Project (my endeavor for 2010 to live life with more Romance + Adventure). Love your spirit Ashley!
  • Looks like a great idea, Ash. So many people get caught up in the "you're doing it wrong!" aspect of Lifestyle Design (for lack of a better term). There are so many thousands of ways to live your life! Do what works, even if it's just a small thing. Not everyone wants to be a world-wandering jetsetter. We all want something different. The point it to do something!

Great job with the video too. Looking forward to more.

you've just explained my thoughts in a way that i never could. loveeee it. and operation get excited...can't wait!!!!!!
  • kathy
AWESOME idea Ashley!!! i'm in video production and absolutely LOVED LOVED your video project. I look forward to seeing them monthly (and maybe even more frequent than that?!).
  • TMFproject
Well I'm glad someone enjoyed watching my big, fat head! :) Thanks for the kudos! I'll admit I have absolutely no experience in video, but I thought it was a worthwhile enough project that I decided that didn't matter. Stay tuned for numero dos! (It's going to be a fun one!)
  • I've been questioning travel a lot lately. I'm starting to see the connection between lifestyle design and travel as more and more arbitrary. There seems to be this idea that if you're not traveling, you're not expressing yourself or living to the fullest or whatever. Well... That's only true for people who love to travel. I have a suspicion that there are a lot of people who don't travel just because they're not into it.

So what I'm trying to say is: You might be onto something bigger than just making the most of your time until you're able to travel. Yes, small-scale lifestyle design might have a large-scale audience. ...and I like that.
  • TMFproject
I love to travel, yes. And I would say that travel does, for me, exponentially increase the excitement factor of my life. That said, travel is not synonymous with excitement for everyone, and it's important not to marginalize those who are seeking to lead more fulfilled lives, but prefer to do so in other ways.

Lifestyle design does not have to mean travel.

Lifestyle design means creating your ideal life.

This won't be the same for everyone, and it'd be impossible to prescribe one thing over an another - you can't predict what will excite the population as a whole. You can only encourage them to dig deep and figure it out for themselves, help them to understand the significance and potential impact of whatever that is, and then motivate them to make it a priority.
  • Ah ha! I succeeded in jedi style wrangling you into divulging the true purpose of OPERATION: GET EXCITED. You're trying to trick everyone into getting excited. Sneaky. Very sneaky. I'm on to you Ambirge.
  • I love this - I left my corporate gig years ago, dragged my husband to Pennsylvania (I LOVE Northeast PA!), and started my own professional pet sitting business which is rewarding and fun.
My problem is balancing HAVING FUN and living life for me with being an adult and making money (it's tight these days, no lie), and saving money and being responsible.
  • TMFproject
Kristen- I took a look at your site - you're from Moscow! A very good friend of mine is from Moscow, and I grew up in NEPA, as well, in Susquehanna County. I did my undergraduate work at Wilkes. Small world!

I understand the pressures you talk about here, but I've got to cringe a little at the words, "being responsible." Your entire life, you've been told to "be responsible." Well, what is responsible, anyway? What does that mean to dissect that word? For whom are we being responsible....for society, so we can say we are doing what we're "suppose" to...or for ourselves...so we can say we are doing what we need and want to?
  • Kent Jackson
I like this! Thanks for sharing and keeping it real.

The key is doing it, doing it now, something, anything, even if it is wrong. Trial and error shapes our journey and that is what it is all about.
  • TMFproject
Well-said, Kent - I'm actually gearing up to do a post on why living messy is better, and it's going to talk about that exact thing. If we can learn to visualize life as more of a game to be played, and realize that that not everything is as serious as we make it out to be, it really frees us up in terms of stress-levels, willingness to take risks and, I would argue that as a result this will lend itself to greater fulfillment.

Okay, now who wants a cold beer? :)
  • Amce
Ashley, you are just the best!!! Every time I read or watch (like this time) what's on this site, I realize I definitely adore your "Middle finger project"... This is just what I was looking forward to in my life! Have fun in Costa Rica!!

im amazed by your video editing. what software do you use? it is pretty good
  • TMFproject
That's hysterical - I'm glad you liked it, considering I had never edited any kind of video before, so I hopped on iMovie and managed to learn it within a day or so. It was fairly easy, but I'm not sure how easy/difficult it is in comparison to other types of software.
