I'm nearly finished with a master's degree in linguistics – that's where I come up with it. As much as I'd love to say I just pulled that out of thin air, I admittedly did not. You're absolutely right about the arbitrariness of language. All human language is. This really comes into play more and more with AAVE (African American Vernacular English), formerly known as ebonics: This is not simply “bad English.” It's its own language with its own set of rules and pronunciation, linguistically speaking. Therefore, because language is arbitrary, then AAVE is no better or worse than standard American English, or any other language. If you're interested in this topic, you might also like something called Cognitive Linguistics. Basically, they argue that knowledge of linguistic phenomena is essentially conceptual in nature.

Take the word “fish,” for example. We spell it that way because f makes fuh, i makes ih, and sh makes shhh, right? But theoretically, “fish” could also be spelled like “ghoti,” and still be argued that you’d pronounce it the same way: gh is pronounced like f in “tough,” o is pronounced like ih in “women,” and ti is pronounced like shhh in “nation.”

How do you come up with this? It's pure comedic genius.

I'm glad I found your blog! I feel inspired to write with more humour as well.

FYI, I have often wondered why we call purple, purple. We could just as arbitrarily call it, humenfrau. Or kosenkoff. We simply have agreed for the sake of communication that this is that. And that is this.

Well, now that we know that you aren’t floating around somewhere off of the Ivory Coast, I’ll send my people with some Blue Label on the double!

And, personally, I rather like the never have to be available approach. We’ll see how I can make it come to fruition, at which point I will immediately challenge you to a sailboat race, except I will likely outsource the driving so I can sit back and watch me dominate. Don’t worry James, I’m not nearly as easy as this Ashley character would have you believe. Especially considering she hasn’t shared so much as a drop of Johnny Walker. That said, I am kind of a sucker for the term “social construct”… Me and my emotional attachments to phrases smacking even vaguely of postmodernism.

I like to take the 9-5 concept’s antiquated efficiency motive and tweak it to my advantage in our multi-timezone business framework unforeseen at its industrial age inception. Let’s see… 9-5 EST is 6-2 PST and 9-5 PST is 12-8 EST. The only overlap is 12-2 PST / 3-5 EST. That means if I ignore the rest of the planet, I can only communicate with everyone in that 2 hour period. So… Thanks to the rotation of the earth and communication technology, I can really only be expected to be available for 2 hours every day. Wait… Does that mean if I get a client 2 hours East or West, I don’t ever have to be available? I’m on it.
