Take Off Your Skirt + Do the Work, Sissy. Or It’ll Eat You Alive. (VIDEO)

So.-

I’m ALMOST done with The Definitive Guide to Getting Off Your Butt, Finding Some Focus, and Jump-Starting Your Biz (So You Can Stop Feeling Like a Procrastinating Asshole, and Start Making Some Cashola), the free resource I’m developing because, sometimes, you just want someone to tell you what the fuck to do.

And sometimes, a foul-mouthed entrepreneur comes along and delivers just that.

Development has taken me longer than I expected because I decided to go all out and make it a print + multimedia experience–you’ll see me deliver hard-hitting advice, dance around like a crazy person, show my softer side, get my teacher on, and sometimes even fly off the handle a little bit…all on video. (Here goes ever getting elected into public office!)

So, the resource is coming!

(Enter your email address here to have it delivered straight to your inbox once released. Again, it’s free.)

In the meantime, however, I thought I’d share one of the videos that I put together, talking about WHAT’S STOPPING YOU FROM TAKING ACTION, followed by a double whammy of Ash uncut, where I may or may not deliver my toughest ass-kick to date. There’s strong language, finger pointing, head swirling, a diss to the 4-hour work week, and bananas flying around in the background.

Okay, so there are no bananas.

But the rest is legit.

You definitely want to stick around to the end where things get a little wild. No, not like that, perv.

Here’s just a taste of what’s to come.

Buckle up.

A Beautiful Mess: A Personal Manifesto of The Human Experience

I need to feel as if my life is meaningful.

And I must work toward something I believe in.

I want to create value.

I want to be bold.

I want to live up to my own expectations.

And never settle unless I choose to.

I want to be exhilarated by every single day.

And be in awe of life.

And the world.

And my part in it.

I want to trip.

I want to fall.

And I want to get back up.

Look the world in the eye.

And do it again.

Because I’ve realized something throughout this entire disaster that has been me.

And it’s that we prosper through adversity.

I am more wealthy for having had nothing.

I am more anchored from not having had a home.

I am more connected from being on my own.

I am more present from having been lost.

I am more encouraged from having been disappointed.

I am more determined from having been defeated.

I am more resolute from having succumbed.

And I am more me now, from having been less me in the past.

But most of all.

I am more successful for having failed.

Because had my failures not existed

I would not have gained the wisdom that I have now.

And that wisdom is precious.

And integral to my future success.

So I will take that wisdom. I will take my failures.  And I will try my best to succeed.

But if it does not work out.

If I fall again.

I will not be upset.

Because I know that I will always get back up.

And after the rain storm.

I will be proud.

Not just content.

To be who I am.

However, if instead of falling.

It turns out that I fly…

Well, then, I’ll be even more humbled.

And appeased to soar.

Until the moment in which I fall once again.

Because if nothing else.

Nothing is permanent.

It’s all a cycle.

Life is a series of successes & failures, wins and losses.

And learning how to use both to your advantage.

And since I know

That no matter what.

I’ll always experience one & the other alike.

…Then in the meantime.

All that I can do.

Is be sure that I’m baring my soul.

And lavishly painting my passion across the sky.

Because at the very least I’ll know that I’ve lived.

And didn’t just go through the motions of life.

Authentically.

Shamelessly.

Without abandon.

Embracing the raw vulnerabilities

That truly make us human.

Because it’s that which makes this world worth experiencing.

And it is only through doing so

That I can truly be me.

A beautiful mess.

But alive.

When Being in Control is a Disservice

Me & Andi, in Portland, Maine--our first stop for the Status Quo Smackdown Roadtrip 2010

I’ve got little patience for excuses.

I proactively call myself out whenever I catch myself making excuses in order to either procrastinate or invent reasons why I shouldn’t put myself out there.

Why?

Because sometimes, putting yourself out there is nail-bitingly, blood-curdingly, will-drive-you-to-drink, flat-out terrifying at times.  It’s far easier to continue doing what we’ve always done, or to take the easier route, than it is to risk our pride, financial stability and comfort in knowning what to expect on a day to day basis.  Risk invites the prospect of humiliation, self-doubt, uncertainty, instability, and often far more work than we imagined.

But on the flip side, risk also invites some highly attractive prospects: self-fulfillment, self-confidence, personal growth, professional growth, exhilaration, excitement, and much hotter sex, of course.  You don’t think the kama sutra was created by play-it-safers, did you?

Essentially the primary difference between risk takers and non risk takers is a matter of control; risk-takers are okay with not having it at all times, while non-risk takers tend to need it more.

Risk means uncertainty.  Uncertainty means loss of control.  But the big question here is: What does loss of control mean?

If we assume that oftentimes, risk is avoided in order to avoid loss of control, then it’s important to analyze why loss of control is so greatly feared.

Must we have control at all times?  What are the consequences if we don’t?

Naturally, for each person the answer to the latter will vary, but examining that answer is the only way we can move toward taking more risks.  Truly ask yourself: What’s the worst that could possibly happen?  Oftentime, the worst that could happen isn’t nearly as bad as we build it up in our minds to be, and by looking at it through a more rational lens, we can reduce our fears, stop making excuses and start taking action.

Risky Roadtrips

As many of you know, I recently embarked on a cross-country roadtrip with fellow bloggers Colin Wright of Exile Lifestyle and Andi Norris of Instigationology.

To start, there are a million other things I could be doing this summer that would be safer alternatives, guaranteed to provide me with a more steady income and the assurance that I’ll be able to pay my bills on time.

And to many people, safe is appealing.  At times, safe is appealing to me, too.  Safe is warm.  Safe is welcoming.  Safe is familiar.  Safe is reassuring.

And while those things are pleasant–sometimes imperative–the opposite of safe can be just as appealing, and even more so.  It’s called vulnerability.

Being vulnerable allows us to greet new experiences with the tender innocence and openness necessary to grow.  To allow ourselves to be taught.  To grant ourselves the right to not know, and to be okay with it.  To recognize when discomfort is in our best interest.

And for me, this roadtrip is doing just that: It’s making me vulnerable in a number of ways, and I’m allowing it to, because I believe that the benefit of taking the risk will far outweigh the benefit of feeling secure.

As always, it comes down to priorities.

And right now, mine favor the value of experience over security.

If you’re interested in learning more about our trip and finding out where you can meet up with us, visit www.waybelowstatusquo.com for our itinerary.  So far, we’ve completed our Portland, Maine stop and will be leaving Philadelphia tomorrow to head to D.C.  The purpose of the trip was to meet readers, have the opportunity to put faces to names, and serve as a conduit to bring like-minded folks together.  So far, we’ve been thrilled with the turn-out, and hope to see you in your closest city!  Visit the live blog for the most up-to-date information on what we’ve been up to, and where we’ll be, or follow me on Twitter: @TMFproject.

VIDEO-Introducing TMFproject’s OPERATION: GET EXCITED

I’ve lived abroad. I’ve written eBooks.  I’ve learned other languages.  I’ve gotten pick-pocketed more times than I’ve gone skiing (true story).  I’ve been a nomad.  And I’ve fallen deeply love with the lifestyle design approach to life.

And as much as I promote that lifestyle with every last drop of my being, here’s the truth: Even if that type of lifestyle is your end goal, you might not be at that point just yet.

So here’s the deal.

Living an excitement-filled, passionate lifestyle doesn’t always have to mean running off to Cuba, adorned in a Zorro mask and armed with nothing more than a leap of faith, in search of exotic cigars and cheap rum.  (Although, if there’s a Zorro mask involved, I would definitely give it some thought.)

Maybe you’re not ready for that yet.

Maybe that’s not even your goal.

Maybe you think Cuba is stupid.

It doesn’t matter.

Whoever you are, wherever you are, whatever stage of life your currently at & whatever side of the potato-potatoe camp you belong to…you have a choice. You have a choice as to whether you want to live your life according to how other people tell you to live it, and you have a choice as to whether you want to live your life according to how you want to live it. It’s as simple as that.

Personally, I pick the latter.

Allow me to introduce The Middle Finger Project’s OPERATION: GET EXCITED.

OPERATION: GET EXCITED is my attempt at helping you to get inspired to see that there are things you can do right here, right now to add excitement to your life. It’s something I’d like to call Small-Scale Lifestyle Design.  Large-scale lifestyle design is essentially all about increasing the quality of your life, so whatever helps you to attain that goal is okay in my book.  Whatever it is that gets you excited, is exactly what you NEED TO DO. Today.  No more oh-sorry-I’m-washing-my-hair-today excuses.  Trust me, you’ll be happy you left it dirty.

To summarize, I’ll be posting videos that will capture me trying out a new unconventional hobby or activity…hopefully without doing too much bodily harm.  The idea is not to advocate one particular activity over another; it’s simply just to help you get motivated to break the routine and go try something new that you’ve been wanting to try; it’s not as intimidating as you might think.  Go ahead, go do something fun!

Alas, I present you with video numero uno – it’s a bit experiential, but I think you’ll get a kick out of it.  Especially because you get to see me get a little nervous on camera…which is admittedly entertaining.

As always, I’ll leave you with this: To hell with the shoulds; life is short…do what you want!
