Forget Your Manners.

In: Confidence,

It’s polite to:

…fulfill your obligations.

…answer them back right away.

…nod in agreement.

…go with the flow.

…do as you’re asked.

…drink because they are.

…take their call.

…give your undivided attention.

…fill the silence.

…and always be there when they need you.

Then again, no one’s ever done anything remarkable by always being polite.

Be stingy with your time in 2013.

It is, after all, yours.

The Competition Doesn’t Have Sh*t On You

There’s never been a person who went to school for accounting and said: BUT WAIT, I CAN’T BECOME AN ACCOUNTANT BECAUSE OTHER PEOPLE ARE ALREADY DOINGGGGG THATTTTTTTTTTT. Growth Requires Muscle Tears

Yesterday I talked about change—and it’s no coincidence. I’m making some big changes myself, given that a lot of things are coming to an end, right now. 1. I need to be stingy with the projects I take on. A full plate does not make for a relaxing workweek.

I’m with you! I’d like to learn a new language this year. Once. And. For. All. 🙂

At the risk of sounding a bit melodramatic, I plan to be very stingy with my time this year due to the fact that I was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer in November, and I’ve found that every Tom, Dick and Harry (yeah, even the single guys find my diagnosis fascinating, which is pretty damned weird, if you ask me) wants to chat me up and check out my status – it’s sorta like being a rock star without the cash or the talent. I’m still a writer, and this experience has given me plenty of fodder for some amazing fiction based on real life, and I’m planning to make cancer my bitch and kick it in the ass soon, but I’ve found that I need to be very selective about whose calls I answer and visits I take. The first three weeks were grueling – in the midst of being told that I had this disease, I also had hundreds of calls from people who haven’t taken the time to talk with me in YEARS. My getting sick made them very interested in taking up my time. So, at the risk of not being polite every minute of my life, I am going to take time for me, and for the people who have been in my life every day, and I’m going to set aside blocks of hours to write it all down and make sense of it for someone else who might benefit from my experience.

Bunny, I can’t thank you enough for your honesty and insight here. I can only imagine you’ve been given an entirely new perspective on priorities–people included–and it’s something we could all stand to learn from. “So at the risk of not being polite every minute of my life…” <—There's a much bigger lesson there than I think most of us realize. Thank you, Bunny. For sharing. And for doing what you're doing. Will you keep me posted?

  4. I am focusing on things that get me closer to where I want to be, and nothing else. No more distractions! On an unrelated note, since I have discovered your site there hasn’t been a single post that I didn’t love and I’ve shared most of them with my audience.

    1. Ash Ambirge says:

YES! I’ve had to remind myself of this many times this past year – and still a challenge sometime! So glad you dropped a note – link us up to your site, Heidi!

      1. Hey Ash-I have posted a response to your comment a few times but it keeps disappearing. Is it because there is a link in it?

Weird! It shouldn’t be preventing you. So. Strange.
