How to Make People Cry (And How It’ll Help You Get More Clients)

In: Online Marketing

Watch this video.

Right now. Before you do anything else. And preferably with a small furry animal alongside you. (Or a vodka. Equally comforting, and less smelly.)

Click here to watch the video on YouTube.

There is so much we can take from that video, but most importantly:

  1. Only by putting yourself into someone else's shoes, can you empathize, and ultimately say the things they need to hear in order to help them choose you instead of someone else. For example, if you're a weight loss coach, you might think that your clients want to lose weight. (Naturally.) So in your copy, you might write, “Want to lose weight?” (Just like your competitors will.) But in reality, while those people want to lose weight, what they really want is to stop feeling like everyone is secretly watching their thighs jiggle with every step they take in their too-tight shorts. What they really want is to have sex without having to contort themselves into just the right position so their stomach doesn't hang. What they really want is to feel on par with (and just as fashion savvy and creative as) other women gliding by in their mint-colored skinny jeans. What they really want is to feel like they're normal. And those are the thoughts that are plaguing the insides of their skulls every single day. So use those thoughts to write your copy, and you'll find that all the sudden your target market's going to be begging you for your availability. Because, suddenly, you're the only one who gets them.
  2. The best promotional tools–whether it's a video like this one, a commercial on TV, an ad for a service, or even a simple product description–don't talk about what they do. They make you feel. Because the feelings you just felt when you watched that are going to stick with you far longer than the feelings you'd get if this video had a check list of the top 3 reasons their hospital is the best in the area for, say, treating cancer. And when you've got no choice but to stick out in a sea of sameness? Unforgettable isn't a luxury–it's a MUST.
  3. Don't be an asshole. You never know what someone else might be going through. And you never know when your smile could, just maybe, change everything.

Want other great examples of this?

Watch this or this or this or read this or this.

And then whisper sweet nothings in my ear forevermore because all of those MADE YOUR DAY and you have no idea what you'd do without a blog called The Middle Finger Project in your inbox. (I frankly don't know what I'd do if I couldn't write it.)

(Maybe ski. I'd probably learn to ski.)

(No I wouldn't.)

Your Customers Already Told You What To Say.

Apr 11, 2014

“If you were a pizza delivery man, how would you benefit from scissors?” “Why is a tennis ball fuzzy?” “What is your least favorite thing about humanity?” “How does the internet work?” Can you believe this? There are innocent people getting clobbered with these kinds of interview questions in dimly lit corporate offices AS WE […]

Businesses Are Like Books: The Best Ones Actually SAY Something

May 19, 2017

The best books are those that say something. That make a statement. Draw conclusions. Make connections. Contribute something new to the discussion. Otherwise, what’s the point in writing it? I think we can all agree that nobody wants to read book after book that regurgitates the same exact thing that they’ve read before. The same […]

The Art of Business Rebellion

Jan 7, 2011

So, the other day I ask The Chilean to stop at the store on his way over and pick up some chicken. He gets here, plops down this bag, and proceeds to pull out a whole chicken, gripping it by the legs and asking me where I want him to put it.  The conversation that […]

Houston, We Have a Problem: Nobody Cares About You.

May 15, 2012

So here’s some Tuesday tough love (which is not even a category, but I’m making it one today): You know why you’re not making the money you want to be making? Getting the clients you want to be getting? And/or living the life you want to be living? Do you know why? The reason is […]

Paris, Wankers + Marketing for Local Business Owners

Jul 14, 2011

So, I’m on a plane. I may or may not be drinking French wine from a miniature bottle that could really be bigger for seven dollars, but I mean, who’s really measuring? Don’t judge. I figure that between having never tried cigarettes, and having stuck up for the nerdy girl that one time in the […]

How to Get Your Message HEARD

Jun 11, 2012

So, I’m flying from Costa Rica to Ecuador this afternoon. I like to leave these little announcements on the blog in the event of my sudden (and unreported) death, kidnapping, violent torture and just to give my ex-boyfriends a little extra something to be bitter about. If I never post again, will someone at least […]

You Can’t Sell Tickets to The Titanic if You’re Marketing it as a Rowboat

Jan 27, 2015

Like it or not, people do judge a book by its cover. And that cover happens to include the words on the front. There’s a palpable difference between the words, “hire me” versus “engagement fees.” There’s also a difference between “buy now” and “apply now.” (Even though those “apply now” snobs drive me insane.) And there’s a difference between, “Cost: […]

The Secret to Client Attraction – Grey Goose Vodka, Baby.

Apr 20, 2011

When I say the words, “Grey Goose,” what automatically comes to mind? a) Purple fairies b) Your high school prom date c) Roseanne Barr d) Vodka As much as I’d love it if the answer were C, you probably picked D, vodka. Congratulations, you are correct. Whether prompted or not, most everyone who sees the […]

Get More Clients + Customers: The One Step You Absolutely, Under No Circumstance, Aren’t Allowed to Skip. Rahr.

Jul 27, 2011

Remember Monday’s riveting post where I swore less than usual, pretended to be a drunken Spanish sailor and emphasized the importance of getting clients and customers in the door? If you don’t, Ginkgo Biloba comes highly recommended. By herbalists, not me. I tried that shit once and it did absolutely nothing to help me remember […]

I just got done doing a live video sesh with my Unf*ckwithable Girlfriends, and one author got on and was telling us that she’d recently attended a comic convention where her ideal target market was hanging out, making it much easier for her to sell her books—as opposed to getting on the giant black hole […]
