There’s a Modern Trick to Getting What You Want, These Days. Shhhh. Come Closer, I’ll Tell You What It Is.

In: Feeling Dead and Uninspired

What if I told you I was giving you your very own daily column, where you could write about anything you wanted?

What if I told you I was giving you your own TV show, where you'd be the star?

What if I told you I was putting you on the radio, where you could talk about the things that mattered to you every week?

And what if I told you that we were going to do fancy photo shoots, and have a fancy Instagram account, and get the world excited about you and your ideas?

That all sounds pretty exhilarating, doesn't it?

The good news: You can have all of this tomorrow.

The bad? No one's going to give it to you.

Too often, we're sitting around with our thumbs up our asses, waiting for someone to notice us; to point us out of a crowd. We somehow think that other people have more power than us to make our dreams happen, but that couldn't be further from the truth.

Nobody gave me permission to start writing this column every single day. (Save us all, am I right?) There was no Committee of True and Actual Greatness, as I call it, that took a vote and said: Yes, Ash is good enough to be doing this, we'll allow it.

As it turns out, the trick to following your dreams?

Is actually following them.

And the trick to doing what you want?

Is doing.

Stay Foolish. Stay Wise. Have CONFIDENCE.

Rules–particularly the dogmatic variety–are most useful for those who aren’t confident enough to make their own damn decisions.   For the rest of us, there’s vodka–so we can cope with the decisions we were foolishly wise enough to make.   So help us, Grey Goose.   Amen. -Excerpt from my forthcoming book, The Middle Finger […]

One Big, Sexy Question for Instant Clarification On: What the Hell Do I Want to Do With My Life?

I was reading something on the Internet yesterday that was praising this woman’s work, and I thought to myself: there’s such a difference between doing work and having work. (And yes, I italicized “such” in my mind.) To do work is to take on a task, whoever’s task it might be. To have work, though—work […]

Are They Telling You You’re Crazy?

My best friend since the first grade (a brilliant graphic designer) just surprised me with this ever-so-cool poster, out of a post I recently wrote titled, “Battle Cry of the Crazies: For Anyone Hustling For More.” Had to share. And now, it’s Tuesday afternoon. I have a meeting with Miss Lit Agent (big plans coming […]

Blow Off Work Today. That’s An Order.

I’ve been thinking about joy lately. I don’t particularly care for the word; every word has its own personality, and the word joy seems to conjure up an image of an old lady with dentures and pearls. The word just feels outdated. Mothballesque, if you will. Nevertheless, the concept remains. It’s stuck in my mind ever […]

If You Feel Like a Big, Fat Imposter Who Doesn’t Deserve Anything and Worries About EVERYTHING, Read This. It’s a GOOD Thing.

I’m writing this from a place that could almost be mistaken for the Italian countryside, were I not surrounded by lizards and toucans and bullfrogs the size of a fucking dinosaur. Rather, I am high up in the hills of Central America overlooking the Costa Rican valley from my squishy, pancake lounger—it sort of reminds me of […]

Sometimes You Fall Into Things. You Fall Into People, Fall Into Places, Fall Into Patterns, Fall Into Deep Dark Obsessions With Red Velvet Cake. (AHEM.)

The other day I tweeted about how I watched The Notebook and so CLEARLY I was living my best life. And then I started thinking about how much I love that phrase, because it’s a good reminder, isn’t it? Am I really living my best life? What does that even mean? Sometimes you fall into things. You fall into people, fall into […]

Where’s Your God Damn Pineapple?

There’s always a reason why you shouldn’t. Shouldn’t spend the money. Shouldn’t be so frivolous. Shouldn’t miss work. Shouldn’t be irresponsible. Shouldn’t act so hastily. And a million other reasons why you shouldn’t do what you’ve been wanting to do. The real question, of course, isn’t whether you should or you shouldn’t. Because when it […]
