How to Make a REAL Emotional Connection With Your Marketing: A Sample from South America

In: Online Marketing

You know how I'm always ranting on about making an emotional connection in your copy, your brand, your message and every single thing that you do?

And you're all, “What does that even mean, Ash?”

And I'm all, “Have you been paying attention?!”

And you're all, “I swear I have–but I still don't get it!”

At which point I roll up my jean cuffs, reveal an inappropriately high red heel for 10 o'clock in the morning, and proceed to shove this video into your arms.

The video below?

Is promoting Peru.

Most people in charge of promoting Peru would tell you about how inexpensive it is, how neat the deserts are, how nice the people are, and that you'll never know what a real poncho is until you go.

Except what they didn't count on is this: Nobody gives a damn.

They aren't going to go to Peru because they'll save $10 bucks and receive a warm smile and some braided alpaca hair as a peace offering; they're going to Peru because of how going to Peru is going to make them FEEL. How going to Peru will become a statement of WHO THEY ARE. And how going to Peru will reaffirm everything they want to THINK ABOUT THEMSELVES.

In other words, your copy, your brand, your message should never be about you.

It needs to be about them.

And how, precisely, your company's going to remind them of who they are, what they stand for, and make them feel more like the person/company/enterprise they aspire to be.

See what I mean.

Watch below.

Cue curtains.

And with everything you write, design and launch this year, remember this video–or I'll start throwing red high heels at your computer screen, and neither one of us will be happy about it.

Marketing Is Fucking Weird, Isn’t It?

Sep 6, 2017

Marketing is fucking weird, isn’t it? Everyone’s really anxious about it all the time, and it makes lots of people go into hiding and never, ever, ever want to come out. (I think they imagine others looking at them and pointing and growling, “Youuuu dirty rotten slimmmmmmmmmeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.) But I gotta say: marketing gets really easy […]

So, People Suck at Talking to Each Other

Oct 29, 2014

People suck at talking to each other. I’ve thought about this post for days now, and turns out? That’s my grand epiphany. My big, profound opening line. As a professional communicator & copywriter, trained linguist, PR expert and author of that filthy blog, “The Middle Finger Project” (my hooligan credentials), I get paid to say […]

Your Customers Already Told You What To Say.

Apr 11, 2014

“If you were a pizza delivery man, how would you benefit from scissors?” “Why is a tennis ball fuzzy?” “What is your least favorite thing about humanity?” “How does the internet work?” Can you believe this? There are innocent people getting clobbered with these kinds of interview questions in dimly lit corporate offices AS WE […]

What if My Customers Aren’t All the Same? How Do I Appeal to Multiple Targets? It’s called Positioning (And for Once I’m Not Talking About the Kama Sutra)

Nov 19, 2015

SELLING YOUR STUFF TO OTHER HUMANS IS HARD. (Caps required.) It’s hard for a number of reasons, but one of the biggest reasons is because nobody really knows what to say. We’re all filled with a million different ugly little self-doubts floating around our nervous little brains. What should the headline say? Do I emphasize […]

We Don’t Sell Those

Jul 6, 2017

There is a rose company, here in the UK, that doesn’t give a fuck that they don’t sell daisies. It’s delightfully refreshing, in fact. There are no apologies about it; no wishy washiness; no trying to cover all the bases. Just this base is fine, thanks. Notice the quiet confidence it exudes? I’m also betting […]

Call Your Fucking Tribe. (Quickie Friday Piece of Ass)

Nov 9, 2012

For my WRITERS–at heart, by trade, or in their wildest, rowdiest, wettest dreams. Because it’s Friday. And this short video will be the most important thing you do all day. (You can’t fool me – I know nobody’s really working.) This is why I do what I do as a copywriter. This is why the […]

I'm a Bad Influence on Women

Hey, I’m Ash! Twenty years ago I was a small town girl growing up in a trailer park in rural Pennsylvania. Fifteen years ago, I lost my family and everything I knew right as I became the first to graduate college. Fourteen years ago, I found myself leaving everything behind for a new life in the city where I could be “normal.” Ten years ago I realized normal was the most disappointing thing that ever happened to me. Nine years ago I quit my job in advertising and pursued my dreams as a creative writer. Eight years ago, I built a 6-figure business doing what I love using nothing more than the Internet and my voice. And now, today, I’m the founder of The Middle Finger Project, an irreverent media co. that helps other women find their voice and teaches them to use it to build whatever the f*ck they want to. With a book coming out with Penguin Random House in February 2020 (YASSS, WE’RE A PRODUCT IN TARGET!) I’m proud to be a bad influence on women and guide them into doing something disobediently brave with their life and their career.

Enter your email address and I’ll send you my advice column every week sharing everything I’ve learned—and so much more.

But no serial killers. I promise I won’t send those.
